Gossypium hirsutum L.

This species is native to Mexico, the West Indies, northern South America, Central America and possibly tropical Florida; introduced and naturalised elsewhere. (Ref. https://en.wikipedia.org). There are 4 species of Gossypium found in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Shrub up to 3 m tall . Stems much branched , ± stellate-pubescent , sometimes densely , irregularly dotted with black oil glands . Leaves alternate , 4–10 . 5 cm long , cordate , weakly to distinctly 3–5-lobed , the lobes broadly triangular to ovate , acute to acuminate , densely pubescent to glabrous , foliar nectaries present ; petiole 1/2–1 times length of blade ; stipules 0 . 5–1 . 5(–2) cm long , subulate or falcate . Inflorescences solitary , axillary ; pedicel 2–4 cm long , surmounted by 3 nectaries . Flowers pale yellow to white , rarely with a purplish centre ; calyx-tube c . 6 mm long , usually with distinct teeth ; corolla cream-coloured or pale yellow , with or without a dark spot at base , usually shorter than epicalyx ; stamens numerous , forming a column 1–2 cm long , filaments 3–4 mm long , anthers 1-celled ; pistil with 3–5-celled ovary and one short style with clavate , 3–5-sulcate stigma .
