Hibiscus rosa-sinensis L.

This species is native to S America; introduced and cultivated throughout the warmer regions of the world. (Ref. Flora of Oman; vol.1). There are 9 known species of Hibiscus found in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

An evergreen shrub or small tree ; up to 2 . 5–5 m tall . Stems erect , branched , woody , green , cylindrical , with simple , scarbid or stellate hairs or glabrous . Leaves alternate , simple , unlobed , usually green , ocassionaly reddish , ovate , acute tip , serrated margin , glabrous ; petiole 0 . 5-2 cm long ; stipules ca . 5-12 mm , linear , subulate , ovate or foliaceous . Inflorescences solitary , in leaf axils ; pedicel ca . 1-7 cm , slender , sparsely stellate pilose . Flowers large , bisexual , symmetrical , typically red with a variety of colours including white , pink , orange , peach , yellow , blue , and purple ; epicalyx bracts c . 1 cm long ; calyx green ; petals 5 , 10 cm in diameter , erect to spreading ; staminal tube longer than petals . Fruit capsule , ca . 2 . 5 cm long , subglobose , dehiscing loculicidally , glabrous or hairy . Seeds many , reniform or subglobose , smooth , sparsely pilose . (Ref . POWO ; 2023) .
