Hibiscus somalensis Franch.

This species is native to SE Ethiopia, and NE Kenya, Socotra, S Arabian Peninsula. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There are 9 known species of Hibiscus found in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Subshrub or woody herb ; up to 50 cm high . Stems and branches erect to prostrate , hirsute with whitish to yellowish hairs , becoming glabrous with age . Leaves 10-20 mm long , oblong to ovate-oblong , base tapering to rounded , margin coarsely pinnately-lobed or irregularly dentate , hirsute . Inflorescences solitary , axillary ; pedicel 3-4 cm , articulated and bent near the apex . Flowers red ; epicalyx of about 8 segments , 5-7 mm , linear ; calyx 5-15 mm ; petals red , tinged purple , ± 8 mm , ovate-oblong ; staminal tube 4–7 mm long . Fruit capsule , ± 7 mm in diameter , subglobose , valves impressed near the apex with edges raised . Seeds 3 × 3 mm , reniform , brown , with a cottony floss , the hairs 4–6 mm long . (Ref .
