Hibiscus spartioides Chiov.

This species is native to E Ethiopia, N Somalia, and S Arabian Peninsula. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There are 9 known species of Hibiscus found in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Subshrub ; up to 1 m tall , branching from the base . Stems and branches sparsely hispid with adpressed hairs . Leaves 1-7 x 0 . 2-0 . 5 cm , linear to lanceolate , apex acute or rounded , base truncate , margin entire in the lower half , irregularly and shallowly dentate in the upper half of leaf ; petiole 1–6 mm long . Inflorescences solitary , in leaf axils ; pedicel erect . Flowers bright red ; epicalyx segments c . 8 , 5-15 mm , linear ; calyx about as long as the epicalyx , sparsely adpressed hispid ; corolla 10-15 mm , oblong ; staminal tube 4–8 mm long . Fruit capsule , 10-11 mm in diameter , subglobose , puberulous , with acute valves and slightly raised edges . Seeds with a cottony floss . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 1) .
