Hibiscus vitifolius L.

This species is native to Tropical & Subtropical Old World; introduced to America. (Ref. Flora of Oman; vol.1). There are 9 known species of Hibiscus found in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Annual herb or perennial subshrub ; up to 1 . 5 m tall , sometimes scandent or scrambling . Stems erect to ascending , pilose-pubescent , often glandular and prickly . Leaves alternate , 2-10 cm long and broad , petiolate , palmately lobed into 3-5(-7) lobes ; lobes generally shallow , each lobe with an obtuse apex , margin serrate , pubescent to pilose ; petiole 3-10 cm . Inflorescences solitary , in the leaf axils or forming terminal racemes by reduction of the upper leaves ; peduncle 1–1 . 5 (5) cm long . Flowers pale-yellow with a red-purple base , ± 5 cm across ; epicalyx of c . 10 bracts ; bracts 8–10 mm long , filiform ; calyx 10-20 mm , 5-lobed , green-veined ; corolla 2-5 cm , obovate ; staminal tube up to 15 mm long ; style-branches 1 . 5–3 mm long , minutely glandular . Fruit capsule , ± 10 mm long , subglobose , hispid , scarious , transversely veined , 5-valved , each valve conspicuously winged and provided with an apical awn about 5 mm long .
