Shrub ; 1 . 5–4 m tall , densely velvety stellate-hairy . Stems greenish and velvety to the touch , woody near the base . Leaves alternate , narrowly to broadly ovate , 3–12(–23) , sometimes 3-lobed , rather coarsely crenate-toothed ; petiole up to 5 inches or more long . Inflorescences solitary , in the leaf axils , usually held ± erect but sometimes pendulous ; pedicel 2 . 5–7 cm long . Flowers showy , red or pink , bisexual , never fully opening ; epicalyx bracts ± 7 , linear-spatulate ± 1 cm long ; calyx tubular 1–2 cm long including triangular teeth ± 5 mm long ; petals 5 , 2 . 5–7 cm long ; staminal column included or exserted to 3 cm . Fruit capsule , red , 5-lobed . Seeds with red fleshy coat . (Ref . POWO ; 2023) .
