Ficus carica L.

This species is native to E Mediterranean, Central Asia and Afghanistan; naturalised in many warm countries. Cultivated throughout the Arabian Peninsula. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There are 9 known species of Ficus found in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Small deciduous tree or large shrub ; up to 9 m tall , with smooth , grey bark and milky sap . Stems grey , branching from the base . Leaves alternate , variable in size and shape , 3-15 x 3-15(-17) cm , obscurely 3-5-lobed or palmatifid , lobes obtuse , margin entire to dentate , glabrous to tomentose , coriaceous , 5-nerved at the base , nerves soft hairy beneath ; stipules falling soon leaving a scar . Inflorsecences (fig) axillary , solitary or in pairs . Flowers minute , green , grow within the fruit , monoecious . Fruit fig , obovoid to pyriform , sessile to subsessile or pedunculated , subtended by 3-4 deltoid bracts , green , ripening yellow-brown to purplish-brown , with sweet , soft , reddish flesh . In Omani studies: Ghazanfar (2003) wrote that: "The fruit is eaten as a general tonic, laxative and diuretic. It is often prescribed by traditional healers for kidney problems". (Ref. Flora of Oman; vol.1).
