Small to medium-sized tree ; up to 5 m tall , with a short trunk , and a rounded crown , exude a milky sap from young twigs when broken . Stems glabrous to pubescent , not thorny ; trunk bark greyish-brown with flattened ridges and shallow vertical furrows . Leaves alternate , simple , up to 5–15 cm long , unlobed , broadly ovate , base cordate , apex acute or shortly acuminate , margin crenate-dentate , glossy , smooth . Inflorescences single-sex catkins ; male catkins 2–3 . 5 cm long ; female catkins 1–2 cm long . Flowers dioecious , small , yellowish-green ; male flowers small , stamens 4 , filaments inflexed in bud , green ; female flowers inconspicuous , perianth with 4 free or almost free segments . Fruit drupe , ovoid or cylindrical , white to pink to pale yellow when ripe , multiple-seeded . (Ref . POWO ; 2022) .
