This species is native to the southern Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, and western South America south to Bolivia and Argentina; widely introduced and naturalised in Southeast Asia and tropical regions. Evergreen tree or shrub ; up to 5 m tall , with tough bark . Stems with spreading fan-like branches . Leaves alternate , simple , 5–14 cm long , 2–4 . 5(–5) cm wide , ovate-lanceolate , with serrate margins , very oblique at the base , dark-green and minutely hairy on the upper side , paler grey beneath ; petiole 3–6 mm long ; stipules linear , 1 . 5–5 mm long . Inflorescences solitary or in fascicles of 2-3 . Flowers white or creamy , small (up to 3 cm wide) ; sepals 5 , green , lanceolate , 8–12 mm long , the filiform tips ± 3 mm long , shorter or longerthan the corolla ; petals 5 , white , broadly obovate , 7–12 mm long , 5–10 . 5 mm wide ; stamens yellow ; ovary flask-shaped , shortly stipitate . Fruit berry , 8–15 mm in diameter , ± globose , yellow turning red when ripe . Seeds scarcely 0 . 5 mm long , yellow . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 1) .
