Myrtus communis L.

This species is native to southern Europe, North Africa, Western Asia, Macaronesia, and the Indian Subcontinent; introduced and naturalised elsewhere. (Ref. https://en.wikipedia.org). There is only one species of Myrtus occurs in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Evergreen shrub or small tree ; up to 5 m tall , with a fragrant essential oil . Stems smooth and gray-brown . Leaves opposite , simple , 15-25 x 7-5 mm , ovate to elliptic , apex acute , base tapering , margin entire , glossy dark green , paler below , covered with transparent dots , aromatic with a fragrant essential oil ; petiole ± 2 mm . Inflorescences solitary to few in axillary cymes . Flowers white , ± 20 mm across , showy , star-like , pollinated by insects ; bracteoles 2 , linear ; sepals 5 ; petals 5 , reflexed when flower fully open ; stamens numerous , exserted . Fruit berry , 7-10 mm in diam . , ovoid , most commonly blue-black in color , each berry contains several seeds . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 2) .

In Omani studies: Ghazanfar (2007) wrote that: "The leaves have been used in traditional medicine for treating abdominal colic, coughs, fevers and headache, nosebleeds and applied on blisters, stings and ulcers. Also used as an insecticide placed amongst clothing to protect against moths, etc". (Ref. Flora of Oman; vol.2).
