Cistanche tubulosa (Schenk) Wight ex Hook.f.

This species is native to Libya, extending eastwards to NW India. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There are 2 species of Cistanche found in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Parasitic perennial herb ; up to 20–50(–80) cm tall , often growing on species of Atriplex . Stems erect , unbranched , robust , often swollen towards the base , yellow to grey-violet , fleshy , glabrous , obscured by early flowers that have died . Leaves 15–30 × 5–12 mm , sessile , scale-like , ovate-lanceolate to lanceolate , obtuse , margins scarious , glabrous , brown , unobtrusive . Inflorescences in dense terminal spikes (10–)15–30(–35) cm , ± cylindrical , showy ; bracts 15–20 mm , ovate-lanceolate , crenulated , glabrous ; bracteoles 2 , 12–15 mm , oblonglanceolate , adnate to the calyx . Flowers bright yellow ; calyx 12–18 mm , campanulate ; tube curved , dilated above , 5-lobed , lobes ± equal , suborbicular to broadly oblong ; corolla 30–50 mm , broadly campanulate , tube curved with 2 bosses at throat , bright yellow often flushed violet , pink or purple , glabrous ; lobes suborbicular , spreading but usually curved backwards ; stamens 4 ; filaments hairy below ; anthers villous . Fruit capsule , ovoid , black , loculicidal , 2-valved . Seeds minute . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 3) .

الاستخدامات


In the Central desert of Oman, people used to eat the plant after boiling it. In Al Harasis area people thought that donkeys get the dark circle surounding their eyes by touching this plant. In Al Batinah region in northern Oman, the plant is known grazed by animals. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).
