Semi-parasitic annual herb ; up to 50 cm tall . Stems erect , simple , rigid , ± pubescent to densely covered with very short hispid hairs . Leaves opposite , 10–35 × 1–3 mm , distantly placed , sessile , linear to linear-lanceolate , acute , finely pubescent . Inflorescences axillary , solitary , alternate , forming long lax terminal spikes ; lower bracts leaf-like , the upper linear to subulate ; bracteoles c . 4 mm . long , subulate . Flowers white turning bluish-black when dried ; calyx tubular , 5-lobed or with 5 (rarely 4) teeth , 8–10 mm , prominently 10–15-veined ; teeth linear-lanceolate , 3–4 mm , elongating in fruit ; corolla white , 2-lipped , pubescent outside , turning bluish-black when dried ; tube narrow , ± 10 mm , curved at right angles just above calyx teeth ; limb with upper lobes fused , obovate , erect ; lower lobes 3 , 6–8 mm , obovate , spreading ; stamens 4 , didynamous , inserted in the tube below the mouth ; anthers monothecous .
