Striga asiatica (L.) Kuntze

This species is native to Africa, extending eastwards to Arabian Peninsula; introduced into other parts of the world. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There are 4 species of Striga found in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Semi-parasitic annual herb ; up to 15–20 cm high . Stems erect , slender , obtusely square , usually branched from middle , densely hispid . Leaves opposite , 8–20 × 1–3 mm , linear to linear-lanceolate , margin entire , veins obscure , hispid . Inflorescences opposite or alternate in lax racemes ; bracts 9–12 mm long , longer than the calyx ; bracteoles ± 2 mm . Flowers red with yellow throat , occasionally yellow ; calyx tubular , 6 mm (including teeth) ; teeth ± 2 mm , 10- ribbed ; corolla 2-lipped , scarlet red , outside yellowish , occasionally entirely yellow , tube 10–14 mm , tube bent near limb , sparsely to densely pubescent ; limb with the upper lobe emarginate , 4 mm wide ; lower lobes spreading , 4 mm long ; style persistent . Fruit capsule , 7 mm , narrowly ovoid . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 3) .
