Argemone mexicana L.

This species is native to Central Mexico extending to Honduras; introduced world wide. (Ref. POWO; 2022). There is one species of Argemone occurs in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Erect , spiny annual or a short-lived perennial herb ; up to 1m , often branching near the base . Stems erect , branched , with yellow latex . Leaves alternate , 12 x 5 cm , sessile , elliptic to oblong in outline , somewhat fleshy , blue/green , with a distinctive white stripe down the centre and along the veins , deeply lobed with sharp , spiny margins . Inflorescences solitary , terminal . Flowers golden yellow , papery , sessile , subtended by 1 or 2 foliaceous bracts ; sepals 3 , concave , imbricate ; petals 4-6 , obovate , 2-3 . 5 x 1 . 5-2 . 5 cm , delicate , soon falling ; stamens numerous . Fruit capsule , 3-4 x 1 . 5-2 cm , oblong , erect , ribbed with sharp prickles , splitting by 3-6 valves . Seeds ± 2 mm , subglobose , with a small beak at one end , black , many , covered with rounded tubercles . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 1) .

In Omani studies: Ghazanfar (2003) wrote that: "In Oman, the seeds have been used in traditional medicine as a demulcent, diuretic, for treating eye complains, jaundice, as a laxative and narcotic". (Ref. Flora of Oman; vol.1). In addition, Pickering & Patzelt (2008) mentioned that: "Various medicinal uses are reported including treating eye infections. Toxic". (Ref. Field guide to the wild plants of Oman; 2008).
