Erect annual herb ; up to 10-25 cm tall , containing a milky latex . Stems erect , often branched from below , glaucous , usually glabrous , sometimes sparsely setose . Leaves oblong , pale green , slightly glaucous ; lower leaves 25-40 mm , roughly oblanceolate in outline , pinnatifid or pinnatisect , with entire or toothed segments ; upper leaves similar but slightly smaller in size , amplexicaul . Inflorescences terminal , solitary ; peduncles long , up to 17 cm , glabrous . Flowers 20-25 mm in diameter , reddish-purple or reddish-orange with or without a black blotch at the base ; petals 4 , broadly obovate , dentate at apex ; stamens as long as the ovary ; filements filiform ; anther c . 1 mm long , broadly elliptic . Fruit capsule , up to 16 x 6 mm , obovoid , pale green with pale yellow ribs , narrowing at the base , glabrous . Seeds less than 1 mm in diameter , kidney-shaped , suborbicular , brownish . (Ref .
