Erect , usually branched annual herb ; 20-60 cm high , with white latex and slender roots , usually hispid throughout . Stems erect , branched . Leaves pinnatisect or pinnate into serrate segments , stiffly hairy ; segments oblong , the terminal the largest , hispid especially on the main veins . Inflorescences terminal , solitary , 15-40 mm in diameter ; peduncles hispid with adpressed or spreading hairs . Flowers dull red ; petals 4 , red with a dark blotch at the base ; stamens numerous ; anthers bluish-black , borne on slender black filaments ; stigma disk with 8-12 rays . Fruit capsule , 10-20 x 7-11 mm , subglobose , rounded at the base , glabrous ; stigmatic disc flat . (Ref . Miller & Cope ; 1996) .
