Sesamum indicum L.

This species is native to Indian Subcontinent; introduced and cultivated world wide. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There is only one known species of Sesamum occurs in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Erect , annual herb ; up to 50 cm tall . Stems erect , simple or branched , obtusely 4-angled , pubescent , usually ± glandular . Leaves lower leaves opposite , ovate-oblong , trilobed , lobes oblong , with entire or dentate margins ; upper leaves alternate , oblong to linear-lanceolate , base tapering , acute tip , entire margin ; petiole 1–2 cm . Inflorescences solitary in the axils of leaves ; pedicels 1–2 mm , pubescent . Flowers white , with darker markings , tubular ; sepals 5 , lobed almost to base , lobes 3–5 mm , lanceolate , acute , pubescent ; corolla whitish or pinkish with red or yellow marks , tubular , 5-lobed above ; tube 15–17 mm , ± campanulate , pubescent outside ; limb bilabiate , with a large lower lobe ± 15 mm , rounded acute ; upper and lateral lobes ± 10 mm , rounded , acute to abruptly shortly acuminate ; stamens 4 , two long and two short , fifth obscure , included .
