Perennial low prostrate herb ; up to 40 cm high , but often much shorter , arising from woody rootstock . Stems woody base , ± prostrate to ascending , spreading , slender . Leaves alternate , 7-11 x 10(-16)-15(-25) mm , dark green , covered with waxy coating , reniform-orbicular , apex rounded with a small mucro , base rounded to slightly cordate , margin entire ; stipules ovate , green with a hyaline margin ; petiole (3-)5-8 mm . Inflorescences solitary , axillary ; pedicels 3-5 mm . Flowers minute , white to green , dioecious . Male flowers ± 2 mm across ; sepals ± 1 mm , denticulate ; petals shorter than the sepals . Female flowers ± 4 mm across . Fruit capsule , 2 . 5-3 mm in diameter , depressed-globose , covered with short hairs . Seeds subtriquetrous , convex on the back , slightly pitted . (Ref . Hairy Flax
