Misopates orontium (L.) Raf.

This species is native to Macaronesia, Mediterranean, extending to NE Sudan, and Arabia; introduced elsewhere. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There is only one species of Misopates occurs in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

An erect annual herb ; up to 40 cm tall . Stem erect , simple or branched , ± pubescent or glabrescent . Leaves opposite , in the upper part of stem alternate , 8–20 cm × 2–3 mm , linear to narrowly lanceolate , entire , glabrous or slightly ciliate , acute to obtuse , base gradually narrowing into the petiole . Inflorescences in terminal racemes , few- to many-flowered ; bracts leaf-like , longer than the flowers ; pedicels 1–2 mm , glandular-hairy . Flowers pale pink or white with purple veins ; calyx 5-lobed , lobes 8–10 mm , linear , sparsely hispid and glandular-hairy ; calyx longer in fruit ; corolla 2- lipped , saccate at the base , 8–20 mm long , pale pink or white with purple veins ; upper lip 2-lobed , lower lip 3-lobed produced into a large palate ; hairs on the lip yellow . Fruit capsule , 6–12 mm , obliquely ovoid , hispid , dehiscing by apical pores . Seeds c . 1 x 0 . 5 mm , cylindrical , greyish-brown . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 3) .
