Plantago albicans L.

This species is native to Canary Islands, Mauritania, Mediterranean regions, extending to Iran, NE Tropical Africa, and Arabian Peninsula. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There are 7 species of Plantago found in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Annual or sometimes perennial herb: up to 10 cm high . Stems short with leaves forming a basal rosette , densely sericeous to long villous . Leaves 30–70 × 5–12 mm , lanceolate , base tapering , apex acute , margins entire , densely white villous , 1–3-veined , greyish-green . Inflorescences in pedunculate spikes , congested above , often lax below ; peduncles 10–15(–30) cm , villous ; spikes cylindrical , usually up to 2 cm , elongating to 10(–30) cm ; bracts 2 . 5–3 mm , concave , ovate with scarious margins , villous-ciliate , pubescent to sparse villous dorsally . Flowers tubular ; calyx 4-lobed , 2–3 mm , lobes almost equal , margins ciliate , dorsally covered with long hairs , midrib green to brownish , weakly keeled ; corolla tubular , 4-lobed above , chaffy ; tube ± 2 mm , glabrous ; lobes ± 1 . 5 mm , ovate , acute , glabrous ; stamens 4 , exserted . Fruit capsule , enclosed in calyx , 3 mm , pale brown , membranous , dehiscence circumsessile , near the middle , the lid and seeds falling with the corolla limb , 2-seeded .
