Plantago amplexicaulis Cav.

This species is native to Canary Islands, S Spain, S Italy, N Africa, extending to Sahara, E Mediterranean regions, eastwards to S Iran and Arabian Peninsula. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There are 7 species of Plantago found in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Annual herb ; up to 35 cm high . Stems short with leaves alternate , arising along from the base of stem . Leaves 8–20 × 0 . 3–0 . 8 cm , lanceolate , base tapering , apex acute , margins entire to distantly denticulate , ± sparsely pilose to glabrous , 3–5-veined , greyish-green above , dull green beneath . Inflorescences in pedunculate , congested spikes ; peduncles stout , up to 30 cm , glabrous ; spikes ovate to cylindrical up to 2 cm ; bracts 4–6 mm , ovate , glabrous , midrib dark brown , margins wide , scarious . Flowers tubular ; calyx 4-lobed , 3–4 mm , lobes unequal , glabrous ; corolla tubular , 4-lobed above ; tube 3–4 mm , glabrous ; lobes 3–4 mm , ovate , acute ; stamens 4 , exserted . Fruit capsule , 5–6 mm , pale pinkish-brown , membranous , dehiscence circumsessile near the middle , 2-seeded . Seeds 3–5 mm , oblong , brownish . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 3) .
