Plantago ciliata Desf.

This species is native to Canary Islands extending eastwards to Pakistan. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There are 7 species of Plantago found in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Annual or sometimes perennial herb ; up to 10 cm high . Stems very short or absent , branched from base , with leaves forming a basal rosette , densely silvery-silky hairy . Leaves l30–60 × 4–18 mm , lanceolate to lanceolate-spathulate , base tapering , apex acute , margins entire or with a few denticulations , densely white-woolly , 1-veined , greyish-green . Inflorescences in pedunculate , congested spikes ; peduncles up to 7 cm , woolly ; spikes ovate to ovate-cylindrical , up to 2 cm ; bracts ± 3 mm , concave , ovate , margins ciliate , dorsally covered with long hairs , midrib green to brownish keeled . Flowers tubular ; calyx 4-lobed , 2–3 mm , lobes unequal , margins ciliate ; corolla tubular , 4-lobed above ; tube ± 2 mm , glabrous ; lobes ± 1 . 5 mm , broadly ovate , acute ; stamens 4 , exserted . Fruit capsule , 3 mm , pale brown , membranous when mature , dehiscence circumsessile , 2-seeded . Seeds ± 2 . 5 mm , oblong , glossy , brownish . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 3) .
