Plantago major L.

This species is native to Temperate Eurasia, extending to Arabian Peninsula, Macaronesia, N & S Africa. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There are 7 species of Plantago found in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Annual herb ; up to 25 cm high . Stems short with leaves forming a basal rosette . Leaves 6–10 × 4 . 5–6 . 5 cm , ovate , base cuneate , tapering to form a long petiole up to 6 cm , apex obtuse to acute , margins entire , ± minutely pubescent to glabrous , 3–5- veined from the base . Flowers in pedunculate , narrow cylindrical spikes 5–11 cm , congested above , becoming lax below ; peduncles stout , up to 24 cm , glabrous ; bracts ± 3 mm , ovate , keeled , glabrous . Flowers tubular ; calyx 4-lobed , 1 . 5–2 mm , lobes equal , glabrous ; corolla tubular , 4-lobed above ; tube glabrous ; lobes ± 2 mm , ovate , acute ; stamens 4 , exserted . Fruit capsule , ± 3 mm , pale brown , dehiscence circumsessile , 8-seeded . Seeds oblong , brownish . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 3) .
