Plantago ovata Forssk.

This species is native to SE Spain, N Africa, eastwards to India and Somalia, SW & S Central U.S.A., extending to N Mexico. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There are 7 species of Plantago found in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Delicate annual herb ; up to12 cm high . Stems short with leaves forming a basal rosette , branched at base . Leaves 15–100 × 2–2 . 5 mm , linear-lanceolate , base tapering , apex acute , margins entire or with a few denticulations , densely pilose , 1-veined , greyish-green . Inflorescences in peduncles up to 10(–16) cm , pilose ; spikes ovate to ovate_x0002_cylindrical , up to 2 cm ; bracts ± 3 mm , ovate ; midrib green to brownish green , margins wide scarious , pilose on the midrib or glabrous or sometimes shortly pubescent . Flowers tubular ; calyx 4- lobed , 2–3 mm , lobes unequal , glabrous ; corolla tubular , 4-lobed above ; tube ± 2 mm , glabrous ; lobes ± 2 mm , broadly ovate , apiculate ; stamens 4 , exserted . Fruit capsule , 3 mm , pale brown , membranous when mature , dehiscence circumsessile , 2-seeded . Seeds ± 2 mm , oblong , brownish . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 3) .
