Schweinfurthia papilionacea (L.) Boiss.

This species is native to Arabian Peninsula, Iran, eastwards to NW India. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There are 6 species of Schweinfurthia found in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

An erect perennial herb ; up to 40-60 cm tall , with a woody base . Stems ± erect to ascending or decumbent , branched from the base , glaucous , glabrescent , young shoots pubescent . Leaves alternate , 7–60 × 7–30 mm , spathulate to orbicular , leathery , slightly fleshy , glabrous , mucronate , obtuse , margin entire , base gradually tapering into the petiole , 2–3 mm . Inflorescences axillary in lax racemes ; pedicels 5–7 mm , elongating in fruit to 14 mm , becoming recurved . Flowers white to cream with purple veins ; calyx lobes unequal , with narrow hyaline margins ; upper lobe 9–15 mm , broadly ovate , obtuse , mucronate ; lower lobe 5–10 mm , ovate ; median lobes 5–9 mm , lanceolate ; corolla white to cream with purple veins , 12–14 mm , upper lip 2-fid , lower lip 3-fid with a conspicuous yellow palate ; stamens 4 . Fruit capsule , 7–10 mm , globose , glabrous , with unequal locules . Seeds many , black , with ridges and tubercles . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 3) .
