Veronica polita Fr.

This species is native to Europe, extending to Central Asia and W Himalaya, Canary Islands, eastwards to N Somalia and Arabian Peninsula; now almost cosmopolitan as a weed. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There are 2 species of Veronica found in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Annual herbs ; up to 10 cm high . Stems ± erect to creeping , mat-forming , reddish , pubescent with long and short hairs . Leaves opposite , dull green , petiolate , up to 5 × 4 mm , ovate , obtuse , rounded at tip , rounded to weakly cordate at base , margins with 2–3 dentations on either side , glabrous to sparsely pubescent . Flowers solitary , in leaf axils , nodding ; pedicels 5–15 mm long , slender , reddish , usually recurved in fruit ; bracts alternate , similar to leaves , slightly reduced toward axis tip . Flowers white to bluish , small ; calyx lobed almost to the base , 2–3 mm , lobes ± 1 mm , triangular , glabrous ; corolla white to bluish , 3–5 mm across , as long as or longer than the calyx ; stamens 2 ; style 1 , 0 . 8-1 . 5 mm long at fruiting . Fruit capsule , ± 3 mm , 2-lobed , flattened , glabrous . Seeds 1 . 3-1 . 7 mm long , cup-shaped , the convex surface appearing cross-wrinkled , tan to yellowish brown . (Ref .
