Polygala mascatensis Boiss.

This species is native to E & SE Arabian Peninsula. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There are 9 species of Polygala found in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Compact perennial herb or small low shrub ; up to 30-40 cm tall , woody at the base . Stems with intricate branching , white-pubescent ; branches ending in spines , grey-green . Leaves alternate , small , 4-8 x 2-5 mm , grey-green , broadly ovate to obovate , apex rounded to retuse , base cuneate , margin entire , covered in soft white hair ; petiole ± 0 . 5 mm . Inflorescences solitary , in the axils of leaves ; pedicel ± 1 mm . Flowers purple ; sepals persistent , the outer 3 sepals 1 . 5-2 mm , lanceolate , appressed white-pubescent ; inner 2 sepals 7-7 . 5 mm , sub-rotund , shortly clawed , yellowish pink to purple-pink with stronger purple veins , glabrous ; petals ± 1 . 5 mm with the crest of the keel purple . Fruit capsule , 6-7 x 4-5 mm , ovate-oblong , notched above , dark brown , compressed , glabrous , without wings , pubescent , enclosed by the larger inner sepals . Seeds black , with dense , short hairs ; caruncle humped . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 2) .

The whole plant is pounded and sequeezed into a solution which later given to animals facing difficulties during labor. In the Central Desert: The plant is heavily grazed by camels. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).
