A deciduous scrambling perennial shrub ; up to 2 m with a woody base . Stems erect to decumbent , slender , long , tendril-like , with velvet-hairy branches . Leaves opposite , gray-green , bipinnate , divided into 3 to 7 leaflets ; leaflets ovate to linear-lanceolate , mucro at the apex , margins entire or with 1-2 teeth , glabrescent , petiolate . Inflorescences solitary or in 3- to many-flowered clusters . Flowers large , showy , bisexual , with a strong sweet fragrance ; sepals 4 , yellow to yellow-orange , curl back at maturity ; stamens numerous ; carpels numerous , free . Fruit achenes , narrowly ovate , puberulous . Seeds seed heads rounded clusters of hairy seeds that are primarily dispered by the wind . (Ref .
