Annual herb ; up to 10(-70) cm tall . Stems erect , round , pubescent , often become glabrous with age . Leaves 5-20 or more , alternate , sessile , palmately ternate with linear segments ; lobes repeatedly subdivide into smaller lobes , narrowly linear , slightly pubescent and often have a silky appearance . Inflorescences spike-like racemes , 6-30(-75)-flowered . Flowers blue-violet ; spur 5-10 mm , shorter than the sepals ; bracteoles reaching to at least the base of the flowers ; sepals 5 , blue to purple , rarely pink or white , nearly glabrous ; petals 4 , same color as sepals or whiter ; pistil single ; stamens with light blue anthers .
