Annual or biennial herb ; up to10-40 cm high , with thick , fibrous roots . Stems erect or ascending , sparsely pilose . Leaves basal leaves oblanceolate , 3-toothed to twice ternately divided into linear lobes ; cauline leaves alternate , tri- or bi-ternately divided into linear segments . Inflorescences solitary on slender pedicels 3-5 cm long ; receptacle sparsely hispid . Flowers small , hermaphrodite , sulphur yellow to greenish-yellow ; sepals 5 , patent , with long hairs outside , early-deciduous ; petals 5 , obovate , indistinctly clawed . Fruit achenes , 5-8 per head , obovate , strongly compressed with a broad sulcate border , spiny or tuberculate . Seeds 2-3 mm long , beak straight or slightly recurved , flattened . (Ref .
