A straggling shrub ; up to 1 m high , with slender branches , leafless for most of year . Stems straggling , slender , leafless , greenish yellow when mature , older stems getting spinescent , glabrous throughout . Leaves 1-4 cm , linear , falling soon . Inflorescences in dense terminal and rigid racemes , 8-20 cm lon . Flowers yellowish green , unisexual ; sepals 1-2 mm , oblong-ovate ; petals absent or rarely present ; disc fleshy , surrounding the filaments and ovary ; stamens 10-18 ; ovary glabrous . Fruit baccate , globose to subglobose , somewhat inflated , subsessile to sessile , white when mature (often red when dried) . Seeds 1 . 2-1 . 8 x 1-1 . 5 mm , minutely tuberculate , brown to black .
