Erect annual herb (may be biennial , or perennial) ; up to 20 cm tall , ± fleshy , glabrous throughout . Stems erect , strictly or profusely branched from base , glabrous , ribbed . Leaves 10-50 x 1-3 mm , alternate or fasciculate , simple , sessile , linear to ± oblanceolate , apex obtuse or acute , margin entire , fleshy , glaucous or green , glabrous . Inflorescences in long densely flowered spikes . Flowers bisexual , greenish white , zygomorphic , minute , sessile or subsessile ; sepals 4 , obovate ; petals white or greenish white , 1-2(-3) , laneolate , entire or bilobed , slightly shorter than sepals ; stamens 3-4 , inserted to one side of the flower opposit the petals ; filaments connate at base ; ovary superior , unilocular , sessile ; carpels generally 4 . Fruit capsule , sessile , depressed-globose , papery , erect , 4-lobed in section and 4-toothed at the apex , opening by apical teeth .
