Woody base annual or perennial herb ; up to 60 cm . Stems di- to trichotomously branched , scabrid with retrorse hairs , more/less glabrous above . Leaves in fascicles at the nodes , the upper opposite , 4–12 , linear-lanceolate to narrowly elliptic , sessile , apex acute , margins entire , hispid , with a prominent mid vein ; stipules triangular , bidentate . Flowers in axillary and terminal cymes ; corolla 4-lobed , white or purplish . Fruit capsule 2-lobed , 2–3 , glabrous , smooth and shining .
