Madder
Dyer's madder
The dried root of the madder plant (Rubia tinctorum), known locally as fuwah, is the source of the rich red colour that is so characteristic of Omani Bedouin weaving. Leather is often dyed, especially when used in conjunction with coiled basketry or for the making of personal articles such as money bags, belts and woman's headdress, the shabkah. A golden hue is obtained from the crushed root of nabat al-'arta (Calligonum comosum). The leaves, twigs or pods of many indigenous trees and shrubs, including henna and the inner bark of the frankincense tree, will give a reddish colour, but the deepest and most permanent red dye is obtained from powdered madder root (fuwah), which is commonly used as a wool colourant in tribal weaving.
