A small tree or spreading bush , up to 5 m with spiny shoots . Stems with anguler branches , sharp thorns at the axils of the leaves . Leaves alternate , evergreen , with entire margin . Inflorescences solitary or borne in small clusters in the axils of the leaves . Flowers with sweet odour ; petals 5 (rarely 4) , white ; stamens numerous . Fruit oval to elongate , broad , low , apical nipple , with three layers: a leathery rind or peel , a spongy middle white layer , and an inner layer containing juicy segments .
