A spiny , evergreen tree , up to 15 m tall with a round canopy and dense foliage . Stems with angular twigs when young , (sub)glabrous . Leaves glossy , dark green , long , thin , ovate , often crenulate , ± glabrous . Inflorescences solitary or in clusters in the axils of the leaves . Flowers fragrant , large ; petals 4 , white . Fruit yellow-orange , oblate spheroid in shape ; pulp segmented , white , pink , and red in colour with a distinctive mildly acid flavour . Seeds white , smooth , usually polyembryonic .
