Perennial herb , with annual stems many from a woody base , erect , green to sometimes reddish-brown , glabrous ; up to 60cm . Leaves opposite , on the lower parts of the stem , 15–35 long , oblanceolate in outline , base tapering into the petiole , margins irregularly crenate or pinnatilobed , dark green and glossy , glabrous . Flowers in leafless terminal cymes , spreading , many-flowered ; corolla maroon to reddish-purple , bilabiate . Fruit capsule , more/less 2-lobed , globose with a fine hair-like mucro at apex , glabrous .
