People from the central desert claim that "only a precies amount of a leaf (quarter of a leaf) is taken as a treatment for diabetec. Excess amount could cause coma or dizzness". (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden). The juice expressed from the leaves of Hyoscyamus species was rubbed into the scalp and hair as a tonic, and to encourage the hair to grow long and thick. However, in local tradition, only the plant that grows 'far from the sound of the sea' is regarded as being effective in this way, the coastal species being believed to be less poent. The leaves are not browsed by livestock, who avoid the plant. The whole plant contains the poisonous alkalod hyoscyamine, as well as small amounts of the alkaloids atropine and hyoscine, which have, in small doses, a hypnotic and narcotic effect. They also have anti-spasmodic and mildly diuretic properties". (Ref. Plants of Dhofar).
