Their most important and most widespread use was as an oxytoxic to treat a woman in prolonged labour or who has a retained placenta [J: ol entefsot lo]. The berries and leaves were lightly crushed and put into water and left to macerate, the strained liquid then being given to the patient. The leaves of the plant were also put into the udder cover of a camel suffering from mastitis, or pounded to a paste and applied to the udder of goats and cows suffering from the same condition. The plant is apparently toxic to livestock, who ignore it (Ref. Plants of Dhofar).
