Daphne mucronata Royle

This species is native to SE Türkiye, extending to W Himalaya, and Arabian Peninsula. (Ref. POWO; 2022). There is only one species of Daphane occurs in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Tall evergreen shrub ; up to 2 m in height , with withish bark . Stems erect , much-branched , slender , glabrescent ; bark reddish-brown in younger stems , whitish and longitudinally fissured in older stems . Leaves alternate , 22-35 x 4-5 mm , sessile , leathery , lanceolate-elliptic to linear-lanceolate , tip mucronate , base tapering , margins entire , grey-green , glabrous . Inflorescences in terminal capitate racemes , shortly pedicellate with pedicel . Flowers creamy white or yellowish , small , inconspicuous , fragrant ; calyx 4-lobed , densely densely wooly hairy on the outside ; petals absent ; stamens 4 ; ovary sericeous ; stigma capitate . Fruit drupe , 7-8 mm , subglobose , fleshy , turning orange when mature . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 2) .

الاستخدامات


The skin of the outer bark is peeled off to make ropes used for bone fractures. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden). In Omani studies: Ghazanfar (2007) wrote that: "The leaves have been used in traditional medicine for treating abdominal colic, coughs, fevers and headache, nosebleeds and applied on blisters, stings and ulcers. Also used as an insecticide placed amongst clothing to protect against moths, etc." (Ref. Flora of Oman; vol.2).
