Low shrub with many shoots , often heavily grazed ; up to 1 m . Stems hispid with retrorse adpressed , white hairs . Leaves opposite , grey-green above , greenish-white beneath , ovate to lanceolate , base cuneate , apex acute , margins dentate , hispid , veins impressed and prominent beneath . Flowers in axillary condensed bracteolate spikes , cylindrical ; corolla pink to blue-purple , more/less 2-lipped , tubular , unequally 5-lobed above . Fruit a fleshy drupe , black when ripe , enclosed by the persistent calyx .
