Leaves thin , circular to circular-ovate , 5–23 cm broad , margins dentate or jagged , basal sinus deep and lobes often overlapping , 5–7-lobed . Inflorescences numerous , in dense panicles or thyrses opposite leaves . Flowers pale green , bisexual ; calyx a minute rim , entire or 5-toothed ; petals about 5 mm , pale green , sweet-scented ; stamens usually (3–)5(–9) , sometimes 0 in pistillate flowers ; style conic , short . Fruit berry , soft , pulpy , skin adhering to pulp , oval or oblong , ellipsoid to globose , skin green , yellow , red or purplish-black , in large , long clusters .
