After rain, livestock browse the new softer greenery and the flowers, but at other times its dryness and prickliness are an effective deterrent. The plant was best gathered when in leaf, and was then crushed and put in water and left to soak overnight, preferably with the addition of a piece of iron in the container with it, or laid across the top of the vessel in which the plant was steeping. The sieved water was drunk on an empty stomach first thing in the morning for three days or so as a treatment for various venereal diseases. The strained juice of the cooked plant was also considered to be efficacious in treating an infected and painful ear. (Ref. Plants of Dhofar). The whole plant has been used in traditional medicine to treat venereal diseases and ear infections. (Ref. Flora of Oman, vol. 2).
