الموطن الأصلي في الصحراء الكبرى، ويمتد إلى شمال غرب الهند. وقد سُجّلت خمسة أنواع من الخزمزام (Chloris) في سلطنة عُمان.
نبات معمر مفترش يصل ارتفاعه إلى 10–30(–100) سم، وله سوق قشية مفترشة أو صاعدة . الأوراق بطول (1–)2 . 5–15 سم وعرض 2–3 مم، مفلطحة أو ملفوفة إلى الداخل، قصيرة، صلبة وواخزة، ومزرقّة؛ أما اللسين فهو غشاء قصير له حافة مهدّبة طويلة . النورات مكوّنةً من عناقيد بطول 2–4 سم . السنيبلات بطول 6–8 مم، إهليلجية أو مستطيلة، تضمّ 3 إلى 8 زهيرات خصيبة وأخرى مختزلة عند القمة، منضغطة جانبيًا بشدة، وتتفتّت فوق القنبعات لا بين الزهيرات؛ القنبعة السفلى بطول 2 . 5–3 مم والعليا بطول 3 . 5–5 . 6 مم، ولها زورق سميك بثلاث عروق؛ والعصيفات بطول 4–5 . 6 مم . والثمرة لها غلاف ثمري ليّن حر .
